This is a problem but Trump made Carney more appealing despite being backed by Trudeau and the establishment. The NDP really sidelined themselves during this entire period.
The urge to back anyone who will stop Poilievre is strong for NDP voters. Relatedly, Singh clearly knew going into an election of Trudeau v Poilievre would result in a Poilievre win, which was unconscionable. Trudeau quitting was essential to taking the steam out of Poilievre, hence why Singh’s initial call was for Trudeau to resign, not for an election. Where he deserves criticism is not for his reading of the situation or strategy, but for not being to communicate the resign demand more forcefully and being pushed to the election demand within a few days, which was seen as a shift and weakness, which it was. If Singh can run an effective campaign with an effective message highlighting contrast between himself and Carney and Poilievre I think much of the traditional NDP vote will come home.
I hope so as long as the NDP wins are taking away from the Tories and avoid vote splitting in key ridings. I do not want a repeat of the recent Ontario election. It is bad enough dealing with quality of life issues in the public schools and how it impacts my family thanks to Doug Ford
Carney is bleeding the non-MAGA conservatives and NDP needs to help bleed them more until Poilievre is no longer a threat, then can regain those uncomfortable with conservative Carney. Two steps for NDP.
Yes and I totally agree. However, I am a bit frustrated at the lack of movement from the NDP outside of some individual MPs on seizing the momentum to sideline the Tories. We still need enough NDP seats on the hill to keep Carney in check should he ever start pushing for establishment politics or pushing legislation that makes no sense for the typical Canadian household.
Yes there are more days I wish Jack Layton was still around. The NDP does need to rethink their leadership and direction after this election, regardless of the outcome.
I see that the Conservatives announced a cut to the lowest tax bracket from 15% to 12.75%. Would this not be the same as what you have outlined in your article i.e. giving the top income earners a tax break as well as the lowest bracket earners? However it would be an even greater break than the Liberals plan.
From the CBC: “Mark Carney promised a "middle-class tax cut" by trimming one percentage point off the lowest income tax bracket.
In a press release, the Liberal Party said more than 22 million Canadians would benefit from their proposed tax cut, which they said would save two-income families up to $825 a year.”
As far as the capital gains goes, anyone selling a cottage, a piece of land (however small - $250k isn't hard to go over these days) on a one-time basis would have gotten hit (harder). 50% on this type of capital gain is already a large tax bill for the average middle-class taxpayer let alone 66%. NDP is always somewhat irrelevant at the national level, usually acting as a spoiler to get the Conservatives in. Their policies are never popular enough to get them a majority. And anyone who thinks Poilievre's tax cuts would be different is living in Lala land.
Lifetime capital gains exemption limit: An eligible individual is entitled to a cumulative lifetime capital gains exemption (LCGE) on net gains realized on the disposition of qualified property.
"If you disposed of qualified farm or fishing property (QFFP) or qualified small business corporation shares (QSBCS), or claimed a reserve for a disposition of QFFP or QSBCS in previous years, you may be eligible for the LCGE."
Frankly, he's doing everything legally. Plus, benefiting more than just the billionaires and giving tax cuts for big business like someone and his puppets are offering.
Yes there are. After he made his millions as a central banker and could have done anything and chose to make billions for billionaire and millions more for himself. No Jimmy Carter!
So care to tell us how Poilievre became a millionaire then? He does NOT come from money. And he’s been an MP for the last 21 years working on just a MP’S wages so just how did PIERRE POILIEVRE become worth more than 25 MILLION dollars hmmm?
Seems to me that it’s a far more important story as how HE became a millionaire as opposed to someone who has worked in investment banking, along with knowing g how economies works and who has been a very well paid employee and a smart investor.
Where did Poilievre get the money to invest and earn that amount of money since he seems to know nothing about economies thinks Crypto would be a far better form of currency that actual money and wants to close the entire Bank of Canada?
Not to mention turn he refuses to sit for a security clearance de something Canrney did in his FIRST DAY. Now why would a person who wants to be the Prime Minister of Canada refuse to get a security clearance that would allow him to see and hear about all the issues coming our way?
Just another bunch of MAPLE MAGAS, or flat out idiots!

To be a social democrat is Canada is indeed frustrating, especially if you believe, as I do, most Canadians are reflexively social democrats.

I’m a little confused.

Nothing else is mentioned.
And no backgrounder on their web page, as there usually is for a policy announcement

Cottages and small land sales are not "qualified property".

I think Tom you are misinterpreting the data. I think you are a con.
It's 574$ who gives a fuck. There are much bigger issues with Carney.
